Disk Detective Talk

making sure I'm marking items correctly

  • Richohinch by Richohinch

I've just started on the disc detective 15 minutes ago 07/feb/2014 and I've looked at about 25 objects, and 20 of those seem to fit the "none of the above/good candidates" criteria. is this normal. Richohinch

    Hi Richohinch,
It is certainly possible to get that many good objects, especially if the program is selecting from a region of young star formation. However, it is unlikely. Make sure you are looking carefully at the first few images to look for signs that the object is not round. In all likelihood, most of the faint objects at short wavelengths are galaxies, and being able to detect their fuzziness is the key to excluding them. Also, make sure that you classify anything without a tight inner core in WISE band 4 as extended. The example here is ok as a good candidate, although it most likely will eventually turn out to be an active galactic nucleus (AGN). However, we will need spectroscopy to distinguish these from disks.

Thanks for your interest and help!
